President Bush has Jumped the Shark

borderYesterday Pierre Thomas of ABC News managed to scrounge some more detailed information on an al Qaeda terrorist threat quietly reported in the never-ending avalanche of warnings, scares and less-than-comfortable terrorist updates that is our daily news fodder.

It appears that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi ['al Qaeda in Iraq'] - who was killed approximately six months ago - was instructed by Al Qaeda #2 man, Ayman al-Zawahiri, to launch a terrorist attack on the U.S. homeland.

No one can say the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi disrupted the plans and ABC News reports the whole incident remains classified and managed by ‘the highest levels of government’.

ABC News’s story here.

borderHow are we to react to this flavor of news story? With so many threats from so many sources reported so many times … folks just don’t even try to respond … and what outlet do we have anyway? It appears only the polling-booth - and yet does has not worked either.

Perhaps the story shouldn’t be about the individual threats but how quickly the American people have adapted and resigned themselves to the notion that this ongoing state-of-fear is acceptable, or worse, expected! I’m sure I’ve phrased this wrong but I cannot formulate a clear and concise description of my feelings. I’m angry. We’re all angry!

Like a frequently battered and abused wife, we’ve become so emotionally programmed to accept this perpetual emotional assault that we’ve simply shut down our senses and muted our outcry.

I, for one, do not want my young kids to grow up in an environment where hope for a peaceful threat-free world is a foolish notion whispered quietly to kin over breakfast - and eliminated at the first news broadcast of the day.

President Bush has clearly jumped the shark. When once such reports would have brought a sound clarifying notion of support for the President - a rallying cry of understanding to defeat the ‘evil doers’ - has now been replaced by sharpened anger with concise blame squarely placed on the President and his failed administration.

The ‘War on Terror’ is now a label for this administration’s inability to control the situation. Like fat thrown on a fire - the Iraq military adventure has enlarged and emboldened the terrorists’ will and certainly not dampened their spirits - at the very measureable cost … of ours.

footnote | my wife informs me ‘jumped the shark’ has jumped the shark.
