Dangerous Rumors | Putin Orders Spetsnaz into Iran?
The blogosphere has picked up a rumor - I think started by wack-job conspiracy site ‘What Does it Mean?‘ - that reports (thus far unsubstantiated) Russian President Putin has ordered Russian ‘Spetsnaz’ (Special Forces) into Iran to “protect ‘vital’ Russian assets, including the Bushehr Nuclear power plant.”
As with all blog rumors - this is starting to be picked up as legit. The blog wildfire story suggests Associated Press originally broke the story but thus far I’m not able to locate any such news.
Whilst it makes sense for Putin - based on his speech at the Munich Conference on Security Policy last week - to antagonize or counter any perceived U.S. aggression against Russia’s economic ally - Iran - the consequences for all parties of such a pronounced military effort are severe.
I’m digging for more info but I hope our wonderful Bush administration realizes some pause for thought is needed by everyone and especially the Hawks.
Thus far - this looks like a crock. There is no AP story. Apologies.

[...] silly rumor (see prior post) of Russian troop deployments in Iran - whilst just rumor - don’t seem quite so far fetched [...]

What are the chances Putin WOULDN’T put troops in place to protect his interests in Iran? Very low, I’d guess.
