Who is “The Man”?
Sleep — the ability to end the day in a relaxed state of exhaustion – a period of time that condenses a crap and ordinarily stressful day else, perhaps, a hectic and wholly well-endowed day of glorious excesses, can turn eight or nine hours into silly dreams and pleasurable ‘Zzzzzzz’. Sleep is an asset! Sleep is a gladly tested ability that should be guarded and protected. Sleep! Sleep can never be over-rated – for it energizes and rationalizes the mind, the day’s events and proudly supports one’s prospects for ‘another day!.’
If you firmly believe you could EVEN sleep, and most comfortably I might add!, as a serial killer – or perhaps even an ugly genocidal mass-murdering fuck – then you TRULY possess a skill you should celebrate and enjoy repeatedly, often and with great intraday-relish!
So, when sleep is disturbed by prolonged periods (sometimes hours) of doubt, restlessness and anxiety … there must be something wrong. Something beyond ordinary – something extraordinary in a really horrible messed-up way! Lack of control, that feeling of hopelessness, like one long haunted house fair-ride that simply becomes no fun at all – can lead to wickedly nasty bouts of sleeplessness and boy, does that become annoying to you, and those around you!
My recent mid-night / early-morning periods of wakeful, wasteful, annoyance have been totally and utterly focused on my very own fear fetish! My fear and appreciation that I have a total and utter lack of control over an onslaught of social and economic malaise that has befallen me, my Family, my friends, neighbors, work colleagues and even enemies! (ha ha!) Perhaps THIS is why I’ve been festering on the question – ‘Who is The Man!?’ and is he doing this? The bastard!
In these days of absolute terror – of global economic doom, horrifying regional wars, the threat of imminent social unrest and the perpetual elevation of fear-mongering, speculative media rants and a heightened blame game … Yes!, isn’t it human nature to try and find cause, of some delicious justification – some sense of order that can explain this skank disorder? Surely banks don’t just collapse based on greed and stupidity? There must have been something or someone pushing them? An almost perfectly-consistent acknowledgement that our slow slip into economic stagnation (or perhaps depression?) must have a winner? a Victor! a Dr. Evil, Stewie Griffin, or Pinkie-and-the-Brain dysfunctional gang with a silly laugh (narf!)!
Who might benefit and why? The roller-coaster of energy prices, commodity prices, inflation then deflation, weak dollar then strong dollar does more than draw pause for concern! How on earth are we to rationalize our situation when it seems to change almost hourly! – and not for the better. Is that normal? If once rock-solid nations, allies and partners are forced to reflect on the very keystones of their democratic and economic beliefs then where does that leave us and our sacrosanct beliefs and aspirations?
The Man must be behind it! Right? Damn straight? Abso-bloody-lutely?
A logical conclusion for an illogical time? ‘Occam’s razor‘ – a now rather cliched and often referenced hypothesis, created by some hideously smart 14th century English monk, suggests that when one is drowned by opinion, fractured truths and sublime possibilities – the most simple of the outcomes, the theorized possibilities or most plagued causes … is often the truth you seek (and should seek!).
What a convenient theory for these times, our ugly days! We are truly submerged in a Katrina of conspiracies, convenient fall-guys, and opportunistic (for some) chaos. So let us propose the most simple causes and perhaps, with a glass (or three) of Scotch, we can sleep better for it!
The most obvious theory therefore – the global conspiracy for a one-Government world order! THE Mother of all conspiracies held and consumed by dare-doers, radicals and rarely-trendy non-conformists.
An idea begins, as always, with the parameters of greed! The financial oligarchs! Banks that don’t play by the rules of this conspiratorial gang are forced to collapse. Their assets are acquired by their banking brethren like Hyenas feasting on their rotting fallen. Bank mergers beget bank mergers, nations nationalize these elephantine banking giants, these very nations, united under a shared goal of a unified common state, combine assets and kapow! … we’ve become a Kumbaya ‘we-are-the-world’ dictatorial super state complete with forced ID tattoos and DNA databases. The ultimate Nanny and Police State rolled into one fantastic ‘It Takes a Village’ vision led by ‘Animal Farm’-esque hidden generals with bad breath and those silly giggles.
The simple proposition:
1 – The Financial Institutions are tackled first! The Man forces an excuse for an electronic ‘run on the banks’ where the insanely-leveraged game of derivatives shuffle-board is broken and financial institutions shut their doors and run like hell. Those banks that abide by The Man’s plans survive and absorb the banking rebels (Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, etc etc).
2 – The World’s Leaders – the Executive – are next! Those brave enough to ponder hope and ‘can do’ are either vanquished from power or brought to power and then threatened with the truth – their lack of control and the power wielded by The Man. Presidents elected by Hope and Change within 30 days become ‘Cannot’ and agents of fear! DOOM befalls all of us unless The Man’s plans are brought into action!
3 - The Legislative – the People’s representatives are whipped to heel by the fear of imminent disaster supported by a society whipped into a frenzy by The Man’s people – elected paper-boys delivering the gospel of fear.
4 – The Media – who deliver the tools of myopic distraction – push the People – the great unwashed populace of ignorant worker bees – over-worked, over-taxed and over-stressed – towards the news fodder of compliance. Celebrity scandal, localized corruption, the odd plane crash, perhaps an octuplet here and a bush fire there … certainly helps to distract the People from the Man.
5 - The People – last but not lease … are drilled by and fed with a regimen of fear, distrust and the ideology of a Government that knows better for the common good, the people capitulate their freedoms and The Man wins!
Supreme global domination of a one-World, one-Government, one-ideaology of oppression and Über-slavery!
What a conspiracy! But quite a contradiction of the simplicity suggested by the Occam’s Razor! For us to suggest The Man MUST be behind the myriad of cluster fucks that is our society in the 21st century – there must be whole heck of a social and power apparatus at work but hidden behind ‘the curtain’ to keep all this in check!
No. I believe the root cause of our ills. The reason – the most obvious and simplistic reason for our problems – and therefore the most likely, is Man’s (not The Man, but plural) stupidity, greed and inability to think rationally about a bigger picture beyond ourselves in the singular. Man is driven by a need to succeed and the consequences be damned. It is chaos at its most perfect. The butterfly effect at its most rational. One man’s greed affects choices, opportunity and destiny of everyone surrounding him or her. The ripple effect is magnified by 6 billion et voila – Chaos. Sometimes good chaos driven in a direction of growth and luck, and other times hideously – I can’t believe we just did that – chaos, Pestilence, War, Famine and Death.
That is a theory I can sleep with.
Footnote: I rather like Einstein’s quote on the subject, “Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.“
